Fire at iPhone Factory in India: What's the Impact on iPhone 15 Production?

A significant event has unfolded at an iPhone manufacturing plant situated in Chennai, India, owned by the prominent Taiwanese manufacturing company, Pegatron. The factory endured a fire incident during the late hours of a Sunday, local time.

Thankfully, Pegatron has reported no casualties or loss of life, and the damage to their assets appears to be minimal. Investigations are currently underway to determine the exact cause of the fire. As a precautionary measure, Pegatron has instructed its factory workers to temporarily suspend operations until further notice.

At present, Pegatron’s manufacturing facility in India is actively engaged in the production of both the iPhone 14 Series and the recently unveiled iPhone 15 Series, which was launched just last week. The potential disruption in production due to this temporary work stoppage remains uncertain.

Pegatron is a critical manufacturing partner for Apple, having been entrusted with iPhone production in India since September of the previous year. Their contribution accounts for approximately 10% of the total iPhone production in the country.

Furthermore, Pegatron is in ongoing discussions to establish a second manufacturing facility, which is slated to be located in close proximity to their existing plant in Chennai, India.

It is noteworthy that Apple has previously enlisted the services of other electronic manufacturers such as Wistron and Foxconn to assemble iPhones in India, a move that aligns with the Indian government’s efforts to promote local manufacturing, thereby bolstering Apple’s presence and production capacity in the nation.
