World Health Organization Introduces Gaming Disorder

World Health Organization has added the term “gaming disorder” to its International Classification of Diseases. This refers to people who are addicted to video and other games and cannot stop. This is the first update in the WHO’s catalog in nearly three decades.

According to WHO, playing games becomes a disorder when you cannot control how long you play and when to stop. When that happens, it will control your life, affect daily situations, and influence your daily routine. WHO officials say that excessive gaming is a serious disorder that must be closely monitored.

In order for someone to be considered to have a gaming disorder, the behavior must persist for at least one year, either constantly or gradually. Gamers put their addiction above their family life, meeting with friends, and going to school.

On one hand, studies have shown that playing video games can help with issues such as depression and dementia. However, gaming can become highly addictive and many people play for longer than is healthy. As a result, people are fired from work or miss school for longer periods of time.

Many continue their addiction even if they see and realize the negative consequences it brings.
