Will Samsung’s XR Headset Be Announced Next Year?

Recent updates from Samsung’s investor presentation suggest that their XR headset is set to be unveiled in early 2025. This announcement might coincide with the launch of the flagship Galaxy S25 at the beginning of that year.

Samsung is collaborating with Google for software development and Qualcomm for the chipset used in the device. Rumors indicate that the XR headset could feature a micro-OLED display with high resolution and brightness, offering a superior visual experience compared to the LCD screens found in similar devices.

The company’s plans to release this advanced XR headset were first revealed at MWC 2022, where CEO Han Jong-hee expressed the company’s desire to develop more sophisticated headsets. However, the product launch was delayed in 2023 due to the introduction of Apple Vision Pro.

In July 2024, Samsung again mentioned the new XR device during the Galaxy Unpacked event, initially slated for release that same year. However, as 2024 comes to a close, the product has yet to hit the market.

Samsung’s Experience in VR Devices

A decade ago, Samsung launched the Gear VR, a virtual reality (VR) headset that used Galaxy smartphones for its display and processing power. The product achieved considerable market success, particularly in 2016, when it sold around 4.5 million units out of a total of 6.3 million VR headsets sold globally. However, in 2018, Samsung ceased production of the Gear VR to focus on developing more advanced VR technology.

In 2017, Samsung partnered with Microsoft to release an augmented reality (AR) headset known as Mixed Reality, but that project was also eventually discontinued. Since then, Samsung has taken a more cautious approach in developing VR and AR headset products.
