“Rift Rally,” from the creators of “Mario Kart Live,” is another mixed reality racing game in the Hot Wheels series.

A PlayStation or iOS device is required for the $130 set.

Hot Wheels: Rift Rally is a cutting-edge mixed reality game from Velan Studios, the brains behind Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit. As in the 2020 Nintendo release, players control a real remote-controlled car and their screen displays an augmented view from the car’s perspective. The game will be available for PS5/PS4 and iOS in March.

The game bundle comes with a single toy car that can be driven in two modes: Campaign and Stunt. In Campaign mode, players set up gates in their room and maneuver the car through them to complete various maps, each of which presents unique challenges. Stunt mode, on the other hand, dispenses with the gates and allows players to drive freely, performing digitally enhanced tricks such as drifts, wheelies, and burnouts to beat their high scores.

The game features both solo and multiplayer options. When playing with a friend, players can race competitively with their own cars or, on PlayStation only, play co-operatively using a single toy car, with the action alternating between players’ controllers.

Chameleon car included in the bundle can transform into any of 22 different virtual vehicles with over 140 variants. It offers “limitless customization” options, including performance modifications that impact the car’s movement within your space. For example, adding an acceleration boost in-game will cause the toy car to speed up. Additionally, players can engage in various mini-games, puzzles, and challenges to unlock new vehicles and modifications.

The software is free to download, but a minimum purchase of the $130 Standard Edition is required. This includes the Chameleon car, four Rift gates, and a charging cable. The $150 Collector’s Edition replaces the Chameleon with a “special edition” model and adds a non-playable McLaren Senna Hot Wheels die-cast toy. Hot Wheels: Rift Rally will be released on March 14 and is available for pre-order starting now.
