Roblox is a widely popular game enjoyed by various age groups, especially younger players. The game provides a platform for unrestricted interaction, which can lead to concerns regarding safety.
Previously, the gaming platform faced criticism for its inadequate protection of minors amidst numerous reports of child exploitation. In response, Roblox seems to have developed a solution by revising its policies. What changes can we expect?
Roblox Reveals Policy Updates for Minors
Recent reports indicate that there were at least 13,000 cases of child exploitation within Roblox in 2023, leading to over 20 arrests for criminal activities.
According to The Verge, Roblox has sent out emails to parents this week informing them that children under 13 will now need parental permission to access chat features.
This restriction extends to children under 9, who will also require consent to play games that contain violent or crude humor on the platform.
Roblox states that these limitations will automatically lift once users reach a certain age, unless parents or users choose to change the settings manually.
Introduction of a New Account Type
In addition to age restrictions, Roblox plans to introduce a new account type for parents next month. This account can be linked to the child’s account, allowing parents to set boundaries directly from their devices.
Beyond merely imposing restrictions, parents will have the ability to monitor their child’s online activities with friends. Roblox explains that these changes will encourage game creators on the platform to categorize their creations according to content type.
This initiative is part of Roblox’s commitment to making the platform one of the safest environments for users, particularly the youngest ones who require a secure online space.
With these policy changes, Roblox aims to enhance the online safety of minors against individuals who may exploit the platform for malicious purposes.
